Why would I want to buy a Pixel ad?

Best Advertising Value
You can buy these tiny little Pixel ads anywhere on this grid and whatever you buy will still be there 5 years from now and it will still be sending your website new traffic as curious visitors click on your graphic that links to your web site. That's millions of visitors to this site and each visit is a chance to send you some new business. Where else can you get that much value for your advertising dollar?

Branding - is the other great benefit that you receive from buying a decent sized pixel ad. Get your LOGO out there in front of a big audience. The more people see it the more likely they are to click through to see your site and your offer.

1. What is a loonie?

It's the official Canadian $1 coin of course!! In Canada we don't have paper dollars any more and our dollar coin just happens have a familiar bird called a loon on the "tails" side of the coin. Now we've come to love it and affectionately call it a loonie. Truly Canadian - eh?

Why not the Million Canadian dollar page? Well, the Loonie is distinctly Canadian, and I'm proud of the unusual names we have for our currency.

2. What is the idea?

The concept is very simple: To sell 1 million pixels at $1 (Cdn) each for a total of $1 million, Hence "The Million Loonie page". What prompted this you may ask? Well, they say necessity is the mother of invention and I needed money to pay for my school tuition, thus this concept and site were born. Pretty neat eh?

Absolutely anyone is welcome to buy my pixels. They are split into 100 pixel squares, each measuring 10X10 pixels. Why not offer single pixels? We could, but that would defeat the whole idea of advertising since nothing meaningful can be placed within a single pixel. And let's not forget the terrible time you'd have trying to click the spec-of-an ad.

You can buy as many pixels of this cheap prime Canadian real estate as long as I have pixels left to offer. You can place your ad, or logo within the space you purchase. Naturally we just ask you don't use obscene or offensive images.

The pixels purchased will stay permanently on the homepage in the space you choose. I guarantee your ad will stay up for at least 5 years but hopefully much longer. Just imagine this as a virtual time capsule, an opportunity to place your mark on Canadian internet history!

3. Who are you?

My name is David Bakker, I'm 22 years old and I live in bright and beautiful Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. I'm currently in my 5th year of study at the University of British Columbia where I'm pursuing a degree as a High School Teacher in Modern History. 5 Years? Such a long time for the degree is it not? Sure it is, but to ensure I could pay for University I worked a part time job, while going to school. UBC is NOT cheap, and unfortunately This year I wasn't so lucky trying to find work to fit my schedule. As a result I'm in debt, and I want out! I think a million would keep me out, don't you?

4. Are you actually serious?

100% genuine, no joke. Although some might find humor in the concept, I'm completely committed to keeping myself out of debt's harmful clutches. Am I really a University Student? And already in debt? You bet, here's my student loan application, and UBC Student ID card. Recognize the face in the picture?

5.Where did this idea come about?

Well, I was surfing the web the other day and saw a web site called MillionDollarHomePage.com. I saw the success that Alex Tew was having with his idea and thought to myself "I should do the same thing - only different - I'll make it All Canadian - because that is what I am, and proud of it!"

I, too, was looking for a way to pay my way through university on my way to being a High School history teacher. So ...... as crazy as it sounds and even though it is a copycat site (conceptually) it is still all my own creation and responsibility. Thankfully, I was familiar enough with making websites to be able to pull this off in short order. So now it's time to try and make a million loonies by selling 1,000,000 pixels, for $1 each.

And so 'The Million Loonie page' is born...

6. Isn't $1 million a bit excessive for University?

Well, $1 million would be ducky, but even if I made 5% of that I'd have all my education paid for. How exciting is that?

In addition, the "Million Loonie Page" rolls right off the tongue. One million is like a benchmark in society, the point of being a millionaire, Canadian style!

67. Where will the money go?

School will be first on my list of expenses, I'm already $10,000 in debt with a couple years left in my degree. A decent financial cushion while I complete my teaching practicum would be incredibly helpful - can you imagine teaching a class and having to work a part time job at the same time? Scary thought!

Secondly, in a heartbeat I'd give my parents a holiday to anywhere in the world. God knows how much they've supported me while I've gone to school. It's the least I could do.

Thirdly, snowboarding, and hockey equipment since winter is nearly 6 months of the year in the Great White North! Oh and let's not forget a warm touque (That's Canadian for wool hat)

And finally, any money left over will be saved, and/or invested. I have several internet projects just waiting to be launched. Call it my mini internet empire.

8. Why should I buy a pixel ad?

Just think, the possibility of your ad being seen by millions of people over a 5+ year period. How much would you pay to be on another website for that amount of time? It's really a no brainer! Plus, you can take advantage of the cheap Canadian Dollar. It's a bargain!

9. Why must I buy at least a 10x10 pixel square?

Well, it occurred to me that buying a single pixel would not allow you to make a graphic, let alone, allow someone to click on it. You can't make a meaningful graphic on a space the size of a dust particle.

Secondly, the intent of the 10x10 was to allow businesses to advertise their services. Since millions will be visiting over that 5+ year time period, that is a lot of eyes, and potential clicks to your business website. So be creative with your space.

10. How long will you keep this site running?

I guarantee this site will run for at least 5 years (Nov 7, 2010), but hopefully many more, if not forever. Wouldn't it be neat to revisit an internet website suspended in time. The internet is such a dynamic entity, that a little nostalgia would be refreshing. Just think where we'll be 5 years from now!

11. Why don't you just get a job to pay for University?

I've gone the job route, and believe me, finding a part time job that pays the bills while accommodating your hectic school schedule is like trying to find a Unicorn. It doesn't exist. I also thought, why do what everyone else is doing, there has got to be a better way to fund my education. I took the road less traveled, and hopefully it pays off.

Fact is I am still working at a part time job to pay my bills and offset the student loans that I was forced to dip into this year for the first time in my life - Debt really scares the heck out of me.

12. Aren't you worried your site will get ripped off?

Of course not. Is imitation not the biggest form of flattery? I mean an exact copy would be rude and obnoxious, but the concept has been created - I'm just interested in where this idea will take off to, and what kind of permutations of the same idea we'll see in the future? It's the internet, anything is possible!
